Roundtable Discussion on Alcohol 2009
The first roundtable discussion was planned as an initial first step in exploring this issue. The aim was to explore the possibility of having a collective response to alcohol-related harm, through sharing experiences of how agencies/residents networks/businesses/public representatives encounter alcohol-related issues.
The first part of the morning was aimed at creating a knowledge base around local reports of alcohol related harm and current issues arising. Those in attendance were asked to report or provide information on the following;
1. In your experience (or that of your agency), how are you encountering alcohol related harm in Ballymun?
2. How do you (or your agency) currently deal with issues presented?
The latter part of the morning was largely aimed at engaging agencies in a collective dialogue looking at possible responses. Groups were formed which provided an opportunity for discussion regarding short term and long term solutions to alcohol related harm.
-
AGREED to a collective intent to have a strategy to reduce the nature and extent of alcohol related harm in Ballymun;
-
AGREED that a community stance on public drinking (acceptance versus non acceptance) needs to be determined;
-
AGREED that consideration needs to be given to providing opportunities for community input/consultation into the strategy (general community, young people etc);
-
AGREED that something could possibly be done in relation to alcohol use and harm for the upcoming Community Safety Week.
-
AGREED to reconvene in a few months to further refine and agree key elements of a strategy.
